Millwall 1 Swindon Town 2

The Beast tames the Lions

Coca-Cola League One

Saturday 29 September 2007

RESULT: Millwall 1 Swindon Town 2

Town scorers: Cox 8, Ifil 79
Millwall scorer: Simpson 56

Jerel Ifil was the hero as Town moved up to 6th in League One tonight with their first away win of the season.

Swindon’s towering central defender stooping to conquer in the 79th minute when heading home a Sofiene Zaaboub near-post corner.

A goal that sealed all three points and delighted a much-relieved Paul Sturrock, who praised his team’s battling qualities - despite not quite giving him the performance he'd asked for.

“They came back at us with everything in the second-half after Cox put us ahead but we survived it,” the Town boss said.

“We hung in and then made it count just at the right time.

“What can I say. Again it wasn’t one the best displays I’ve ever seen. But it’s the points that matter.”

Cox again

Off to a flyer after only six minutes when Simon Cox neatly converted a Christian Roberts' cross, Town looked like they’d have to settle for yet another draw - at best - after Millwall recovered and then levelled just after half-time.

Continued pressure that forced Swindon to defend in their own box for long periods, with strikers Paynter and Cox frustratingly reduced to chasing long ball clearances.

And keeper Phil Smith more than busy in the Swindon goal keeping the score at 1-1.

But when finally presented with the chance to fight back, Town took it.

Fans that were again on the edge of their seats just moments after when an audacious Simon Cox turn-and-shot from 25 yards almost caught the Millwall keeper off his line.

Town will hope to make it three in a row when they play Swansea on Tuesday night.
